Culinary Corner
I LOVE to bake during the holidays but sometimes things just don’t turn out the way I planned. Ya’ know what I mean? I found this awesome Baking Hotline that is my go-to place when my latest culinary creation turns out less than perfect. You might want to keep it handy in case you run into any baking problems over the Holiday Season.
My favorite beverage for the Christmas Season is Olde-Fashion Wassail. Greeting your guests with this warm, deliciously spiced brew will conjure up the nostalgia of Christmas’ Past. A warm blanket of cider, mulled wine, nutmeg and floating orange slices in a decorative punch bowl creates the perfect celebratory holiday gathering!
Olde-Fashion Wassail
Ingredients
- 2 quarts hard apple cider
- 2/3 C Brandy
- 1-1/2 cups orange juice
- 3/4 cup pineapple juice
- ½ C brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
- Dash ground cinnamon
- Dash ground cloves.
Directions
In a large saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Discard cinnamon sticks. Serve hot in mugs. Yield: 10-12 servings (2-1/2 quarts).
LONG-ARM QUILTING SERVICES
We are accepting quilts through the Holiday Season however, we cannot guarantee they will be finished by December 25th. So please keep that in mind. Currently, from the time your quilt is received, it will be 1 to 3 weeks for completion.

TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES
Many of us are frantically finishing our quilts in hope of giving them as a gift to someone special. If you have run out of time, or fabric, to make your binding from scratch, a great option is double-fold bias tape that you can purchase in most stores like Joann’s, Walmart, or Hobby Lobby. Some grocery stores even stock a few! Most of us have at least one of these in our locale. A package of tape is about $3.50 and it comes in many colors.
Some traditionalists may frown on this option, but I’m a believer in using whatever means necessary to get those quilts finished and out the door so my special loved ones can start using them. If I wait to bind it when I feel like it, my unfinished quilt might find its way to a shelf in the closet and not get finished for several years! YIKES!! So, this is a great alternative to a shelved-quilt for sure.
There are myriad ways to attach a ready-made double-fold bias tape binding. Kimberly, at Sweet Red Poppy, has one of the best tutorials I’ve seen that explains it step-by-step. You can find it here.
Happy Quilting and see you Next Year!!
