Log Cabin Quilt'N Sew February Newsletter

Hello Quilting Friends!!

I love February for so many reasons—not only because it’s the month of love and gift-giving to my hubby and grandkids, but also because we start climbing out of the really cold weather here in Colorado! I always wondered how this tradition came about and decided to research its origin. Apparently, there were a number of martyrdom stories that led to the establishment of this day when we honor our beloved. One was the imprisonment of Saint Valentine of Rome for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century.  Legend tells us Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer. Numerous later additions to the legend related this act to the theme of love. An 18th-century embellishment claims he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution. And yet another tradition says that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Whatever the actual events, sharing cards, flowers, chocolates and dinners/lunches with hubby and friends.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries--oh so pretty— remember when we really tried to impress our special someone??

This is probably one of the easiest, fast ways to do just that!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of Fresh Strawberries (wash & pat dry
  • 16 oz of Milk Chocolate Chips (or Dark)
  • 2 Tbl of Shortening
  • Parchment Paper

Directions

In a small bowl, place chocolate chips and microwave at 30 second intervals. Or, use the melt chocolate feature of your microwave. Stir in between each interval. If too thick add the shortening to thin. Be sure not to use water to thin as it will cause clumping of your chocolate. Dip each strawberry in the chocolate and lay on parchment paper-lined cookie sheet to cool.  Then refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving. For a little extra pizzaz, place on an elegant platter or candy dish for serving.

TODAY'S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Scalloped bindings are absolutely beautiful and add so much to the quilt’s softness. I will say at the outset though, they do take a bit more time and tenacity.

Some of the best tips out there are:

  • First and foremost, don’t cut the scallops until the binding is attached.  I know this sounds counter-intuitive but it maintains the durability of the outside edge by not cutting on the bias of your quilt top which would create stretching.
  • Use bias-cut binding as it will go around the curves and inset corners much easier and lay flat.
  • Hand-sew the binding to the back rather than machine sewing. If this is a turnoff to you, a straight edge may be a better idea.
  • Have a pointed tool available like the tip of your seam ripper to stabilize and move the seam allowance out of the way as you are attaching the binding.

If you want a full tutorial on creating scallops and binding scalloped edges, here are a couple that are very good!
