TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES
Tips for starting your first quilt –The Christmas Season is a time for new beginnings. Many of us start our first projects during the New Year. In case you are someone who is just getting started in the wonderful world of quilting, here are a few tips to get you started on the right foot as they say.
-
- Choose a simple project such as a table runner.
- You don’t need to buy all the gadgets. You will need a sewing machine with a straight stitch, a cutting mat, a ruler with a grid, a rotary cutter, seam ripper, needles, pins and scissors.
- Choose your fabrics of 100% quilting cotton. These can be found at a neighborhood quilt shop or fabric store.
- Prewash your fabrics because they can shrink and the bolder colors can release excess dyes onto the lighter fabric background of your quilt.
- Always use a ¼” seam allowance when sewing the quilt seams.
- The quilt shop can help you with the type of needle you will need to use and with the pattern you will use. They may also have classes to help you, or you can use the internet for guidance.
- Make sure to trim and bind your quilt to make it last a lifetime.
Merry Christmas and Happy Quilting!!
