Also, we are highlighting Batik Fabrics this month. Batiks are handmade Indonesian fabrics using dies and wax.   Batiks are different than traditional cotton fabrics because they are hand-dyed and the colors go through both sides of the fabric, unlike cotton fabrics which have a right and wrong side.  The colors are vibrant and unique.  On that note, Riley Blake has a new line of Batiks which Log Cabin Quilt ‘N Sew carries in wide back sizes. You can find them on the link below:

Culinary Corner

Here is a nice hot soup that is so good on these cold winter days of January.

Tomato Basil Soup (www.loveandlemons.com/tomato-basil-soup)

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ lbs of Roma Tomatoes
  • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped carrots
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 3 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves
  • 1 loose-packed cup of basil leaves
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the tomatoes cut-side up on the baking sheet.  Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 1 hour or until the edges just start to shrivel and the insides are still juicy.
  2. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.  Add the onions, carrots, garlic, and ½ teaspoon salt and cook until soft, about 8 minutes.  Stir in the tomatoes, vegetable broth, vinegar and thyme leaves, and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, working in batches if necessary.  Blend until smooth.  Add the basil and pulse until combined.
  4. Garnish the soup with basil leaves and serve with bread.

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Tips for sewing half square and quarter square triangles (Reference - Pat Murphy’s Piecing Makeover)

Half-square and quarter-square triangles are used in many of our quilt patterns. So, it’s a good idea to have as many tips and tricks at your fingertips to knock these out in rapid succession to make piecing your quilt a breeze.

    1. When making half square triangles, cut squares 1” larger than your finished block size.  Place the squares right sides together, matching the corners.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the top square, securing the squares with a pin.  Sew ¼” from each side of the diagonal line, making sure you don’t sew over the pins.  Cut the squares in half on the diagonal line. Press the seams open or to one side.  Now square up the block aligning the 45-degree line on your ruler with the diagonal seam on the fabric.  (See Diagram 1)
    2. Now to make the quarter square triangles, place the half-square triangles right sides together. Nesting the seams.  Draw another diagonal line across the seams of the triangle.  Secure with a pin or pins.  Sew ¼” from each side of the diagonal line, making sure you don’t sew over the pins.  Cut the squares in half on the diagonal line.  Press the quarter triangle seams  to one side.  Square up the block aligning the 45 degree line of the ruler with the diagonal seam. (See Diagram 2)
