February Newslettter--20% OFF Vintage Fabrics

Hello Quilting Friends!!

January was certainly a cold month. We have had a few snowstorms in Colorado already. February brings more cold days, but also, some warmer days as well. The colder days mean I can quilt to my heart’s content and not feel guilty! February is a time for Valentine's Day wishes too, and planning for Spring. It's time to put those quilts together for Easter, Mother's Day and all those Springtime gifts!

NEW MONTHLY SALE

This month, Vintage fabrics are 20% OFF!!  The sale begins Monday, February 12th and ends Sunday, February 18th!

No promo code is needed and there is FREE SHIPPING on orders of $65 or more.

Did you know that vintage quilts date back to the early settler’s when the European’s came to the America’s?  Most vintage quilts can be identified by hand piecing, embroidery, and quilting throughout. The early colors were different shades of blue, later branching out into greens, oranges, pinks, and the darker civil war colors.  The most popular vintage patterns were the Dresden plate, the friendship pattern, crazy quilts, Roses of Sharon and the double wedding ring—all popular during the Depression era. THE CULINARY CORNER

Valentine’s Day is a good time for sugar cookies.  This recipe is from the 1930's Betty Crocker Cookbook for roll-out cookies.  You can decorate them any way you like, but in keeping with Valentine's Day, we went with cute pink hearts.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter shortening
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 teaspoons milk
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Directions

Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla.  Add egg.; beat till light and fluffy.  Stir in milk.  Sift together dry ingredients.  Blend into creamed mixture.  Divide dough in half.  Chill 1 hour.

On lightly floured surface, roll to ¼ inch thickness.  Cut with desired cookie cutters. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 Degrees 6-8 minutes.  Cool slightly.  Remove from pan and decorate as desired.

LONG-ARM QUILTING SERVICES

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

How to applique with ease.

Applique can be accomplished many different ways.  This month’s TIP is using the “Lite Steam-A-Seam 2” method, which is easy to use due to the double sided adhesive, and the ability to move the pieces around when you have placed them on the background.

  1. First, trace the image in reverse on the side of the “Lite Steam-A-Seam 2” that is easiest to remove.
  2. Remove the front side of the “Lite Steam-A-Seam 2”, and stick the “Lite-Steam a Seam 2” unto the back of the fabric and cut it out.
  3. Then remove the other side of the “Lite Steam-A-Seam 2” and place the applique onto the backing fabric.  You can move the piece around until you find the correct position.  Once done, iron into place.
  4. Now you can decorate or applique the item with your machine or hand embroidery.

Happy Quilting!
