TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Today’s tip is on storing our fabulous fabric stashes! Why is that even important, you say? You may not think about this much, but fabric is costly and a great value—most of us are paying $14.00 a yard these days for 44-45” fabric. That’s a lot compared to days gone. And, most fabric does not lose its value over time, even if the color or print has ceased to be trendy. Fabric lasts 10, 20, 30…even 100 years, and can be used if cared for properly. Here are some key steps to take:

  1. Try to prevent “permanent” wrinkling.  It is important to keep the fabric free of wrinkles to prevent having to iron or clean when reaching for the fabric at a future time. In some cases, wrinkles cannot be removed if stored many, many years folded in the same way. In this case, you may have to cut around the permanent creases. If you are storing indefinitely, it’s a good idea to refold from time to time.
  2. Avoid moisture and light.  Moisture and light can cause mold, mildew and fading which are nearly impossible to remove from fabrics.  Storing fabrics in airtight containers can keep them free from moisture and light. Keeping fabrics in a room with consistent temperature and humidity will keep the fabrics from becoming moist.
  3. Keep pests away from fabric.  Moths and carpet beetles love to feed on fabric.  Airtight containers are the best way to keep pests away from fabric.
  4. Consider storage shelving. Storing on a shelf is a good place to help keep fabric up off the floor where all the fabric can be easily viewed.  Neatly folded is best, in equal sized squares if possible.
  5. Use airtight containers. This is a good option when you don’t plan on using the fabric anytime soon. You can label and stack your stash for easy visibility in the future.
  6. Fabric/Drapery Hangers. If you are one of those people (like me) who purchased 5 yards of that beautiful fabric you saw but don’t really know what you plan to do with it yet, consider hanging on sturdy, long-term hangers. Drapery hangers are great for the task because they are wrapped with cardboard dowels that do not cause creasing when hanging heavy-weight fabric on them.

Happy Quilting!
