June Newsletter & SALE
Hello Quilting Friends!!
June is a time for fun in the sun, school is out, and it is that time of year to celebrate weddings, Flag Day and Father’s Day too. Weddings are particularly special at this time of year! The Amish often made the double wedding ring quilt as a gift. The pattern dates back before the depression and even as early as the 1800’s. The quilts were often made during the depression as wedding gifts because they could be made from scraps. All of those beautiful scraps bring gorgeous color to the new couple’s home. This quilt symbolizes love, romance and the marital bond.

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES
Sewing Thread Sizes and Use: Choosing the right thread for your project is important. Thread comes in different sizes and textures. Choosing the right thread can make all the difference in the look and feel of your project.
- Sewing thread uses four common size measurements, weight, tex, denier and commercial sizes. In the US, the most common measurement is weight. Common polyester threads are typically 40 weight, while 30 weight and 50 weight are also popular.
- Larger weight numbers indicate a finer, smaller, looser, less dense thread. Small numbers indicate a heaver, thicker and more dense thread. Most polyester thread is 40 weight while cotton thread for sewing linen may have a weight of 50.
- Sometimes, there is a second number following the weight of the thread such as 50/2 which indicates the number of strands in the thread. Most sewing thread is either one or two ply (strands of thread).
- The Tex rating of thread tells you how many grams a 1,000 meters of thread weighs. For example, if 50 meters of thread weighs one gram, the thread will have a Tex of 50. This metric system is often used in Europe. It makes a lot of sense because the higher the weight, the heavier the thread.
- The Denier unit of measurement indicates how many grams 9,000 meters of thread weighs. For example, if 9,000 meters of thread weights 80 grams then the thread will have a Den of 80. As with Tex measurement, the larger the weight, the thicker the thread.
- Below is a chart for the types of threads typically used for different types of projects.
