Tips, Tricks & Techniques

Pressing vs Ironing

The outcome of your quilting will advance quickly when you “press” rather than “iron” your quilt strips and blocks. What’s the difference? Ironing is laying your hot iron on the fabric and pushing it back and forth. This pushing motion distorts and stretches your fabric. While the distortion  may not be visible when ironing small pieces. It becomes clear when you try to piece the smaller pieces into larger blocks. Once side will end up being longer or wider than the other. Also, you will see waviness in your blocks and in the larger quilt as you sew the blocks together.

Pressing, on the other hand, is where we allow the heat and weight of the iron to “press” a crease into our fabric. We want to avoid an intentional pressure and movement across the fabric that causes distortion and stretching.

 Steps to Properly Pressing

1)      Set the iron’s temperature to cotton or cotton/linen.

2)      Place the two units just sewn together on the ironing board—closed--with right sides together as it was sewn.

3)      Set the seam by placing the hot iron on top of the closed, sewn unit for a few seconds.

4)      Let the unit cool a bit. Using your fingers, gently flip the fabric back along the seam, exposing the right side. Finger press the seam open.

5)      Place the edge of the iron on the lower strip and very gently work it over the seam. Allow the iron’s heat and weight to crease the fabric, avoiding pushing & pulling the iron. The fabric that the seam allowance will be pressed toward is on the top. Continue this process, raising & lowering the iron, for the full length of the seam.

6)      Finally, turn the sewn unit over and press the wrong side.

You will be amazed at the difference this technique makes in the final outcome of your quilting project!

Happy Quilting!
