Featured Product(s)

We are highlighting blender fabrics this month. Blenders Fabrics are quilting fabrics where the print is an abstract, tone-on-tone or washed appearance that helps to blend the different components of the quilt together. Super versatile cotton blender fabrics are the foundation of any great quilting project. Our new line of blenders, Supreme Color Waves, just arrived and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Share The Love Heart Pillow

By QT Fabrics

Dimension: 23 x 23”

Scrappy fabric projects are my favorite because I can use up all those small pieces I have in my stash! This is a great pattern for that purpose. Also, If you want to make a quilt from this design, just make 9 of the pillow tops and sew them together (3 across x 3 down) to make a 69” x 69” lap quilt. Voila!!

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Tips for Applique:

Have you seen a beautiful quilt hanging in a quilt shop that was appliqued and thought to yourself “I wish I could do that but it is way beyond my skillset!”  Well, now you can.

Applique is the art of attaching a fabric to a background fabric. It is usually considered an ornamental or decorative technique which is why we love seeing it so much. There are 3 basic techniques used: hand stitching, machine stitching and fused applique. We’re going to discuss fused applique today since that is the simplest method.

Fused applique is the quickest of all the techniques. An iron-on adhesive such as a fusible web is bonded to the back of the fabric shapes. It is ironed in place to release the glue contained in the webbing to stick your shape in place. Depending on the fusible web you choose, it may not create a very long-lived finish on its own. You may need to secure the shape with finishing stitches either by hand or by machine to make the item wash-and-wear. If you want a fused applique that will hold up to washing, be sure to read the product to ensure you have a product that offers durable, permanent bonding that holds up to washing. I use Heat-N-Bond Ultrahold for this purpose and still wash gently without agitation or other garments brushing against the applique.

How to do fused appliqué.  Choose a bonding fiber such as Bondaweb, Wonderunder, Steam-a-Seam II or Heat-N-Bond Ultrahold.

1.      Print off your templates and resize them if necessary.

2.     Lay your paper under the fusible web and trace.

3.     Cut around your drawn templates.

4.    Lay the templates on the wrong side of the fabric

5.     Iron according to the product’s directions.

6.    Cut out the pieces using scissors or rotary cutter.

7.     Lay in place on the background fabric. Adjust until you are happy with the placement.

8.    Iron using product’s permanent placement directions.
