March Newsletter & Sale!

Subject: March Newsletter & SALE!

Hello Quilting Friends!!

This is OUR month!!  Have you thought about some fun ways to celebrate National Quilting Month? How about:

1)    Take a day for YOU! Reorganize your happy place. Let’s face it, the art of quilting is a little on the messy side. All that mess can lead to idea-block too.  So, take a day to re-invent your favorite space.

2)   Attend a Quilt Fair or Quilting Museum in your local area.

3)   Join a quilting group in your community or on Facebook if you can’t get out-and-about to meet.

4)   On National Quilting Day--March 15—join your quilting sisters across the nation by displaying your quilts on the front porch railing, across a rocking chair or any fun way you can think of. Be prepared to share your love of quilting with your neighbors when they ask about your beautiful displays!

Next up--our new End-of-Bolt (EOB) sales. An EOB cut is not as small as a remnant, but really needs to be cleared from the shelf to make room for the new fabrics. The yardage cuts will range from ¾ yard to

1 ¾ yard cuts. The best part—these 108” wide cuts will be offered at 30% OFF!!  One yard of 108” wide fabric is equivalent to 3 yards of 44-45” wide fabric; so this is a smok’n deal!! And, these fabrics can be used for any home décor or sewing project you can imagine. Check in frequently because new postings will show up weekly.

Culinary Corner

Well, in the past I’ve posted Corn Beef & Cabbage, Soda Bread recipes and so forth on  St. Patrick’s Day. But, I didn’t have a really cool dessert recipe specific to the holiday to share. When I’m looking for something new, one of my go-to places for recipes is the Pioneer Woman.  And, she didn’t disappoint. There are many Chocolate Guiness Cake recipes out there, but this one “takes the cake”!!

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Tips for Creating Accurate Seam Allowances:

In quilting, we use a seam allowance of ¼” unless the pattern directs otherwise. The standard when quilting is a ¼” seam allowance for your pieced blocks. This ensures your seams don’t pull apart when the top is being quilted or during washing.

How do you know if your seam allowance is truly ¼”?? Sometimes it is hard to gauge just looking at it.

Here is a quick method to check your accuracy--

1. Cut 3, 1-inch strips of fabric about 6 to 10 inches long.

2. Sew 2 of the strips together with what you think is a 1/4” seam allowance. Sometimes there are markings on your sewing machine. Some people use a piece of tape. We’ll call this Unit A.

3. Press the seam of Unit A to the left or right side (it doesn’t matter which.)

4. Sew the 3rd strip to a raw edge of Unit A using a ¼” seam allowance. We’ll call this piece Unit B.

5. Press the seam of Unit B in the same direction as Unit A.

6. Turn Unit B to the right side. Using your ruler, measure the center strip width. If your seam allowance is ¼” wide, the center strip width will measure exactly 1 inch.

7. If the measurement is more, or less, than 1 inch, repeat steps 1-6. But first adjust your needle, or marking tool (eg., painter’s tape mounted to your sewing machine), etc. to the left or right depending on what is needed to come closer to ¼”.

Happy Quilting
