Hello Quilting Friends!!
June is such a fun month with so many events—Father’s Day, official beginning of Summer, Flag Day, Juneteenth holiday, lots of weddings and BBQ’s! Right now the majority of us are experiencing a heat wave. Here in Colorado we are almost at 100-degrees already. That is very unusual for us this time of year, and what a wonderful reason to be forced to stay indoors! I for one, will make the best of it and quilt to my heart’s content!!

Culinary Corner – Summer Shrimp Pasta Salad

Who doesn’t love a cold salad on these hot summer days. One of my favorites is cold pasta salad. Adding fresh, ice-cold shrimp really raises the protein levels while producing a beautiful creation for your table.

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES—Scissor’s Care
Dull scissors are frustrating! When scissors are dull the quilting experience is less than enjoyable and takes twice the time. Scissors and blades are a key tool in our toolbox. My husband who is a woodworker, is always dusting, tightening screws, oiling and sharpening his tools. He tells me it is the key to precision, fine work working results. Our fabric craft is equally important. Recently, I added new, higher-end scissors to my toolbox and researched proper care to extend their life. Guess what—care for our tools is the same as the woodworker’s craft! Here’s what I learned:
1. Frequently, wipe the lint and dust from the blades with a soft cotton cloth using an even stroke.
2. Protect them from dropping, cutting adhesive tapes or coming in contact with pins. And of course we’ve all heard—only use them for fabric cutting. I’ve use a sharpie writing on the handle: FABRIC ONLY. This reminds me which scissors to use and woe-be-it, my husband would use them…????
3. Place a drop of oil around the screw and between the blades. Wipe the oil down the cutting blade as well. I’m now doing this weekly and it’s amazing the difference this makes in daily cutting!
4. Keep them sharp. An easy, effective and low-cost method is to cut fine grit sandpaper with your scissors. Do it a couple of times with long cuts. This means you cut it in one go--the whole edge comes in contact with the sandpaper in one cut. Repeat this cut about ten times. Your scissors will be a lot sharper and you’ll be a happier quilter!!
