Ghoulash is the perfect comfort food for a snowy, cold day. I’ve collected several ghoulash recipes through the years and what I love about this one is we usually have the basic ingredients in our pantry, it’s quick to make, and so delish!

Free Patterns         Freedom Flair by Riley Blake Designs

In 2026, the nation will come together to celebrate a historic milestone — the 250th anniversary of the United States. The Semiquincentennial celebration marks a once-in-a-lifetime moment in history, honoring the signing of the Declaration of Independence and 250 years of our American ideals. In our of our 250-th Anniversary, many of us will be creating beautiful patriotic quilts. So, this is the first of many free patterns I’ll be sharing this year with a patriotic flair.

TODAY’S TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES—

Time & Money Saving Tips & Tricks

Read directions first. To help avoid mistakes, always read the instructions, and even jot down a few notes or highlight areas you might get tripped up on later.

Cut large pieces first. If you accidently miscut a large piece, you’ll have enough to recut it if you cut the large pieces first. Then you can work the smaller pieces around the large piece surplus.

Tool Prevention & Maintenance. When rotary cutting, start with the blade about ½” up on the ruler, then cut it back to the tip and then cut forward. If you start cutting at the tip of your ruler it will chip over time and not be square. Secondly, oil and clean your scissors. Blunt scissors do not cut straight and require mutiple cuts to finish the job.

Press Don’t Iron. Pressing is achieved by setting the iron on the fabric, raising it and setting it down again in a new spot. Ironging is moving the iron back and forth which stretches and distorts the fibers causing your fabric to not lay flat.

Pressing Direction. In most cases it’s best to press toward the darker fabric, if the pattern designer hasn’t instructed differently. If the instructions direct pressing differently, then follow those instructions. Pressing toward the darker fabric will keep shadows from appearing in your finished quilt.  If you prefer, you may press seams open which flattens 4-point joints significantly. It can take a lot more time but the results are beautiful.

Accuracy Matters. Those pretty points we all love come from stitching straight and accurate seams. And, be sure to press each seam, joint, and block before moving on to the next step.

Stay Stitch the Perimeter. This is the last step before quilting. Stitching a straight line 1/8” from the raw edge around the perimeter will keep your quilt from fraying and stretching when the longarm quilter mounts it onto the frame for quilting. The more the quilt is handled, the more it will stretch if there isn’t a stitchline holding it in place.

Batting Color Matters. If your quilt uses a lot of stark white fabric, it is best to use bleached white batting rather than natural. Natural has a cream or ecru appearance and if the white fabric isn’t a heavy enough weight, the batting may appear a bit dingy through the fabric rather than a nice bright white.
