Tips, Tricks & Techniques – Mitering Made Easy

Mitered borders—Want to know how to create that beautiful 45-degree angle on each corner of your quilt? It’s that special touch that frames your quilt in beauty and professionalism.

Butted Corners vs Mitered Corner – What should I use? If you are using a random small-to-medium print, butted corners look beautiful. However, if the pattern is directional in an obvious manner, or has distinct stripes, a mitered corner will give you the most aesthetically pleasing outcome (see pic below).

Mitering in 10  easy steps:

1.       Notice in the sketch above, that each border crosses the perpendicular border by roughly 2”.   This is necessary to draw and sew your mitered corners.

2.      To the length of your top and bottom border measurements, add the width of the left and right sides of your borders + 4”. Cut border strips to that length.

3.       To the length of your left and right border measurements, add the width of the top and bottom border measurements + 4”. Cut border strips to that length.

4.      Attach top & bottom borders by centering to your quilt top, pin and sew with a 1/4" seam allowance. DO NOT cut off the excess border length at each end.

5.      Attach left & right borders by centering to your quilt top, pin and sew with a ¼” seam allowance. DO NOT cut off the excess border length at each end.

6. Lay flat the quilt top (right side face up) with excess border edges overlapping each other. Using a ruler, draw a 45° line from the seam intersection out to the corner. Note: I like to draw my line on both borders to ensure lining them up when pinning. Pin right sides together, matching the drawn lines.

7. Sew directly on the drawn line, starting exactly at the seam intersection.

8. Trim excess fabric, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.

9. Press the seam open for a crisp, flat corner. Trim off any excess border fabric that extends beyond the borders.

10. Repeat for the remaining 3 corners.

11. Voila! Beautifully mitered corners in 10 easy steps

Happy Quilting!
