As America prepares to celebrate its 250th Anniversary in 2026, it's fascinating to look back at the role sewing and quilting played in everyday life during our nation's earliest years.
In the late 1700s nearly every household relied on sewing skills for survival? Long before fabric stores, sewing machines, rotary cutters, and longarm quilting machines, women spent countless hours spinning wool, weaving cloth, mending garments, and hand-stitching household necessities. Fabric was precious. Every scrap was carefully saved and repurposed. Many early American quilts were made from worn clothing, flour sacks, and treasured fabric remnants brought from Europe. Nothing went to waste. Quilting bees became an important part of community life, bringing women together to complete large quilting projects while sharing news, recipes, friendships, and support. In many ways, these gatherings were the quilting guilds of their day.

• The sewing machine would not be invented for more than 70 years after the American Revolution.
• Every quilt made in 1776 was stitched entirely by hand.

Colonial Berry Shortcake Trifles
This month's recipe celebrates flavors that would have been familiar to many early American families.
Fresh berries, sweet biscuits, whipped cream, and a touch of vanilla come together to create a simple yet
elegant dessert perfect for summer gatherings and Independence Day celebrations.
Ingredients:
- 4 shortcake biscuits, cubed
- 2 cups mixed strawberries and blueberries
- 1 cup whipped cream
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions:
1. Toss berries with sugar and allow to sit for 15 minutes.
2. Layer biscuit cubes, berries, and whipped cream in individual glasses.
3. Repeat layers.
4. Top with additional berries and serve chilled.
