· Shop Your Stash First- Before heading to the fabric store, take a few minutes to "shop" your own sewing room. Pull out your bins of fat quarters, half-yard cuts, and one-yard pieces—you may discover the perfect fabrics for your next project without spending another dime. Sometimes the best inspiration has been waiting on your shelf all along.
· Group fat quarters by color family—they'll practically design your next quilt for you."
· Organize by Size, not just Color-- Most quilters organize fabrics by color, but consider creating separate bins for Fat Quarters, Half-Yard Cuts, and One-Yard Cuts. When a pattern calls for a specific cut size, you'll be able to find exactly what you need in seconds. Pair this system with our new Fabric Cutting Guides, and project planning becomes even easier!
· Plan Before You CutA few minutes of planning can save yards of fabric over the course of a year. Before making the first cut, consult a cutting guide to see how many squares or rectangles you can get from the fabric you already have. You'll reduce waste, stretch your fabric budget, and often discover enough material to complete an entire project from your stash.

To show you how easy these are to use, I’m using GEQuiltDesigns.Com's FREE pattern called Toni as an example. A good friend of mine shared this pattern recently! It's a quick sew and looks VERY different when using different color schemes. And best of all, it's a wonderful way to use up our stash!!

At first glance, it looks like a fun scrappy quilt (which it is) made from lots of different fabrics which can appear overwhelming at first. But a quick look at our Fat Quarter Cutting Guide tells us everything we need to know.
Fabric Requirements
? 5 Fat Quarters (for 92 rectangles 2 ½” x 4 ½”)
? 1¼ yards background fabric (for large rectangles & border)
? ½ yard binding (154” in length x 2 ½” wide)
That's it!
If your pattern calls for X-squares, X rectangles, or X-binding inches you can use our quick cutting guide. Instead of guessing—or pulling every piece of fabric off your shelves—you can use the cutting guide to confirm how many fat quarters are needed for your pattern before you make the first cut.
